 Thanks again @azaozz - I have tried your patch and it does does not appear
 to make and difference to my prime problem ie edits made with the "Visual"
 tab in TinyMCE are not saved.

 Lines 1665 to 1695 of my edited class-wp-editor.php file are as

 @floriantactisens - please excuse newbiness but could you tell me please
 how I can see the javascript error messages (I'm using Firefox but could
 use Chrome).
