 Based on the lack of respect from @Matt (and the team) in providing
 transparent reasoning, it’s safe (for me) to assume this was done
 selfishly. Otherwise, we’d have answers by now, i.e., why they’d be okay
 with removing a feature, so many developers depend on.

 I don’t want to speculate what those selfish reasons are; however, the
 lack of transparency fosters conspiracy.

 Was this decision made by Automattic?
 Does Automattic want to hide the fact that their plug-in adoptions are in
 decline? Or that all plug-in adoption is declining, I.e., WordPress.
 Does this data: level the playfield for outside investment into trending
 plugins, and do they want to have an advantage with the data they gather
 from the multitude of plug-in installs?
 Does Automattic have access to this data directly or indirectly (via
 connections with team members)?
 Seriously, what is the purpose of hiding this data if not for selfish
 reasons?
