Because patch days aren't just about fixing bugs.  An added benefit is 
sending a message to developers that everyone is welcome and this is a 
community effort.  Every day should be Christmas where we give to one 
another freely and celebrate, but it's nice to actually have a day set 
aside to remind us, just in case we forgot.

At least, that's the value I see in it.
