I've never heard of a stats program being broken by slashes, and I don't 
find dashes to be particularly compelling as a general use case. (It 
breaks the natural hierarchy of the URIs as well.) The localization is 
very valid, but generally that sort of thing is handled in gettext, 
rather than as a configuration option.

When I originally wrote the Multiviews stuff it was because I had just 
discovered the technique and I thought it was pretty cool, but the 
problems it causes cross-platform and lack of flexibility don't make it 
worth it. I think requiring mod_rewrite for "pretty" URIs is perfectly 
fine, and has worked with few problems in the WP camp.
