Often you will use your blog to post original content, which will often
make you the author.
To your actual question, the base cannot be changed using a base WordPress
install, but it can be done using various plugins, for example
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-author-base/

I believe you also need a plugin to remove the custom taxonomy base from
your URLs, but I'm not positive on this.
