Comment:

 This is a classic "use more memory to reduce I/O and CPU" trade off.  At
 the ~4,000 calls to `wp_normalize_path()` I was seeing about 240KB
 additional memory usage.  This is of course going to vary depending on
 exactly what paths you end up normalizing.
