 @audrasjb currently this is in a weird state because it was already
 committed into 6.9 with a not fully resolved patch, but it was provoking a
 regression from 6.7.

 If you cannot make it into 6.8.2, I would punt with `early` into 6.8.3
 rather than 6.9. From all the commits that have been added into 6.8.2 so
 far (and into 6.8 overall), this is one of the biggest regressions, hands
 down.
