 I implemented a PR for this in https://github.com/WordPress/wordpress-
 develop/pull/8130, the approach is ready for review.

 I didn't add tests yet, as I first wanted to get your feedback. The
 `@since` annotations are for now 6.8.0, since it includes a new filter,
 and I personally consider this more of an enhancement than a bug. It's a
 limitation, but it was intentionally done like that initially, and we are
 now revising that decision. Anyway, if there is a strong push to backport
 this to the 6.7 branch, I'm not opposed and will update the version
 numbers accordingly.
