the address but the site owner is now confused why the value they entered
is not respected? If WordPress were to try and prefer the site admin’s
choice, wouldn’t we be back here where this thread is discussing the fact
that hosts want to override site choices to protect their IP reputations?
We're only upset that you're overriding our `-f` because the whole point
of the `-f` is to fix the wordpress@$sitename debacle. If you made the
sender address configurable, we wouldn't need `-f` on our WordPress
vhosts, and then there would be no issues. This is how every other website
manages to send email; it really isn't complicated.
1. Make the address configurable
2. Server admins remove the `-f` override
3. Somebody types a usable address into the box
4. No one is surprised by what happens
5. Everything works if you choose an address that you're authorized to use
(The precise details depend on how badly WP and PHPMailer decide to shoot
themselves in the foot in response to all of these what-should-be non-
issues, all for lack of a text box.)
> and how should discrepancy by indicated in the site config when `-f` is
provided in `sendmail_path`? in a sense this same problem exists now with
a plugin, but on the other hand the plugin is the result of a deliberate
choice to set a specific value, and different plugins can choose different
resolutions.
There's really no discrepancy. All of these problems boil down to one
thing: the lack of a text box to type in a usable address in a manner that
is consistent with the design of WP, the internet, and hosting
environments.
