 @azaozz I'm a bit concerned by your insistence that this PR is a blocker
 for 6.6. At this point, the current code has been in production since 6.5.
 Can you clarify what bug this fixes or feature this blocks that is
 critical to the 6.6 release?

 While I'm not opposed to a refactor of the way font files are being
 handled, the changes you're proposing to `wp_upload_bits()` seem unwise to
 make at this point in the release cycle and would be better to land early
 in the 6.7 cycle.
