 I did some tests on @jeroenrotty's request and found out that it still
 works as expected in WP 6.5.5, but the bug was present in 6.6-RC2, 6.6 and
 6.6.1. On the old version (same environment) searching is much slower, so
 I guess something was changed to improve this, with this side effect as a
 result.

 Searching for new plugins still works the same, so it's a different
 component, although it looks quite similar.

 Available workaround: searching without hitting enter still works as
 expected.
