 Many thanks @azaozz for your help with this.

 I have reverted class-wp-editor.php back the the original version.
 Enabled SCRIPT_DEBUG as per step 2 of
 https://wordpress.org/support/article/using-your-browser-to-diagnose-
 javascript-errors/
 Using Chrome I repeated the action that is causing my problems (saving and
 edit to a Page using the Visual tab of TinyMCE.
 There was a lot of info in the console but the screen grabs are the errors
 highlighted (highlit?) in red.
