Comment:

 I looked at this a little bit (PR in progress:
 https://github.com/WordPress/wordpress-develop/pull/1335) and found the
 xhr object is not passed back to fetch as expected here, so I was ''unable
 to extract the post count from the header''. Perhaps we are overriding
 fetch somewhere else?

 Appreciate any help getting the header here, I agree moving this data to
 the header will be best to avoid breaking anything. Another option would
 be to introduce a new endpoint for the request.
