Comment (by costdev):
I'm inclined to agree with previous comments from @johnbillion,
@hellofromTonya, @Clorith, @SergeyBiryukov and @joyously.
A few points:
- The Theme Editor is not just for power users. If a user wants to change
some text, etc. sometimes the only available way at that time is to paste
a filter snippet from support forums into the `functions.php` file. This
requires zero knowledge about FTP or hosting control panel based file
managers.
- Unless I'm mistaken, the Theme Editor should still apply for block
themes for the same reason as above.
- Every discussion about the Theme Editor will need to differentiate
between 5.9+ and <5.9, purely because we named something "Editor" and
moved the old to make way for the generically-labelled new. "Editor" is a
good term for it, but not when there's other editors available.
- A decision to move menu items should be considered final given the
impact it has and a repeat of that would cause unnecessary frustration for
users.
- We don't have consensus for this change. That usually means we don't
implement the change.
@poena originally stated "Having both an Editor menu item and a Theme
editor menu item may be confusing". I agree. As we don't have consensus
for moving the menu items, what about one of these alternatives?
1. Keep all three items in the submenu without changing the names. We can
decide to change this in a later version based on user feedback.
2. Keep all three items in the submenu, change "Editor" to "Site Editor".
3. Keep all three items in the submenu, change "Theme Editor" to "Theme
File Editor" and change "Plugin Editor" to "Plugin File Editor".
4. Keep all three items in the submenu, change "Editor" to "Site Editor",
"Theme Editor" to "Theme File Editor" and change "Plugin Editor" to
"Plugin File Editor".
A Make post with a call for opinions may be appropriate to bring wider
community opinion in on this.
