Comment (by johnjamesjacoby):
I am surprised to see the ability to enable/disable auto-updates presented
so prominently.
Has it been discussed someplace other than Slack to not have any UI for
this, not expose it to end-users, and simply opt-in everything by default?
Especially considering how much agitation the idea of exposing a UI for
Core caused at the time.
As we’ve all likely learned from years of using operating systems on
computers and phones, update fatigue does not just hit us from the updates
themselves, but also from deferring every decision to the user when the
natural desire is nearly always going to be “please let the machine do the
work for me so I don’t have to.”
What I do not prefer about these design iterations, is that these links
are being offered to users alongside other normal actions, as if we are
making it easy for them to be toggled.
Programs like WordPress should not make running out-of-date code easy to
do, and if a plugin cannot be trusted to be update automatically, users
will not know that until it’s already too late anyways, and by that time
fatal error protection will have likely prevented the majority of
failures.
