Comment (by Levdbas):

Let's not forget that the .live feature was removed from jQuery 7,5! years
ago. Plenty of time for everyone to take a serious look at their codebase
and improve things. As a plugin developer that's the thing you commit to.
That being said, I think it is time to pull the trigger in 5.5 and not
wait any longer. Yes, there will be loads of topics, yes, quite some admin
pages will break but let's hope it will be a wake up call for many of the
 developers.

An e-mail to the mentioned plugin/theme authors to inform them about the
upcoming change would be a good thing to do. Warning site owners about
 incompatible plugins even better.

 > Despite the wide variety of plugins and themes in the repository, let's
keep in mind those available from other sources, the authors of which may
not be contactable by email like wp.org authors. Specifically for themes,
I'd say that's the majority of sites out there.

Regarding external plugins and theme's outside the repositories: these are
mainly premium anyway and people make a living out of them so it's even
more of a wakeup call to them to ship good products.

This might be a harsh statement to many of you but something has to
happen, this is slacking for way to long and there is no pretty way to do
 it.
