 I added a related ticket #47056 with a very narrow goal to **just** get
 the `'wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields'` hook added that is first mentioned
 in this ticket by @helgatheviking.

 I did some research to find the following information about existing
 plugins on wordpress.org:

 - `60` already implement the `'wp_nav_menu_item_custom_fields'` hook
 - `156` plugins use the `'wp_edit_nav_menu_walker'` hook

 Given that only one (1) plugin can create a custom walker without
 conflicting with another plugin that does the same, it seems there is a
 lot of chaos ''"in the wild"'' that has been created by the lack of this
 hook.  Here's hoping we can finally reign in this beast, and even dedicate
 the fix in memory of the original poster of this ticket?
