Comment:

 I would assume — merely off the cuff — that part of the added challenge
 here would be in determining how to translate the placeholder into not
 just an image URL, but a particular size, alignment, and now even a
 particular block. This as opposed to options, theme mods, or featured
 images, which need just the attachment ID. It's possible this challenge
 has ways to address it in place that I'm overlooking, though.
