 BuddyPress eventually evolved Notifications into a first class component
 similar to Groups, Activity, Messaging, and the others.

 Like what’s already happened here in 2 days, a simple easy POC immediately
 turns into a complex application inside an application. Post types and
 taxonomy terms aren’t a great fit either, because notifications are
 generally per-user, not per-role or whatever else.

 Not being a nay-sayer; only that everything from UX to data storage will
 require a completely new invention to work the way notifications
 traditionally are expected to work.
