 Ah nope! I think you're correct, any 'custom' things should be handled
 with well extra custom things as well :D . That would be the case as well
 for any live site out there that might end up having fully customized
 footers etc.

 But to be honest, that is something that could happen with any theme
 update that introduced new things, I'd still wouldn't worry much about 1
 extra link that is not by default enabled as well.
