 Was it discusses ever, to integrate thumbnail support for categories too?

 [https://wordpress.org/plugins/category-thumbnails/ This plugin] adds the
 feature to WP to add thumbnails (feature images) to categories and use
 functions:
 {{{
 has_category_thumbnail();
 get_the_category_thumbnail();
 ....
 }}}

 However, it may be nice to have these features built-in.
