Comment:

 As this is exactly what I doing a lot - editing text at a specific point
 by placing the cursor - and I don't have this problem.

 I therefore suspect there are some third party script interacting with
 your editing. Have you tried this on a fresh install with no active
 plugins and a default theme? Have you tried with another browser or
 device?
