 I can appreciate that. Although, at some point someone is left with the
 bill. Those users may not understand, but that doesn't make them any less
 responsible.

 It's off-putting that you say something doesn't align with core
 philosophies, then in the next breath encourage plugin developers to take
 actions that violate those philosophies. Pardon me for saying it, but it
 kinda comes off as lack of leadership.

 I never said do it tomorrow, but I'm very concerned there isn't a plan
 written up.

 WordPress is build around a 10 year old PHP version, that has been
 unsupported the past 6 of those years. I can't get my head around why that
 doesn't scream liability to everyone.

 How much time is wasted backporting what should be modern code to meet old
 constraints?

 When does it become more costly to continue this, than to bother 2.5% of
 users? Users who could very easily be instructed and led through an update
 process, or presented with a choice of options.
