Comment (by Sobak):
We both seem to agree on that matter. The migration certainly ''is''
possible and such way has been proposed several times already.
Nonetheless, all that core developers keep saying is that it's ''"too
early"''.
Maybe there is a tiny chance to agree upon '''what''' PHP 5.2 usage is
acceptable. It's clear that it decreases but publicly available stats
might include many abandoned websites which are not updated anymore and
thus will not be affected by any minimal requirements bump. That's why I'd
like to know what's the PHP version share across more recent WP releases.
Meanwhile, number of potential improvements postponed due to the ancient
(over six years since EOL!) gets bigger and bigger... I also really
struggle to understand why there is no interest in engaging more PHP
developers to contribute by getting closer to today's standards. As you
said, it ''can'' be done without leaving milions of users on unsecure
versions (contrary to letting them use PHP versions with so many known
vulnerabilities).
