Comment:

 [attachment:32296.diff] seems like an obvious first step here that could
 potentially even go into 4.7.x. Any reasons why we still haven't at least
 tried that in core? Note that it's been in the customizer UI experiments
 plugin for some time now. Committing that doesn't mean we wouldn't
 continue exploring additional options moving forward, here or in other
 tickets and plugins.

 To recap: this patch makes the customize pane larger on very large
 screens, providing a better balance between the size of the preview and
 controls pane on screens wider than 1600px. It doesn't get into
 significant changes to the way that space is used or introduce the
 complexity of a user-configurable slider; rather, it strives for
 simplicity along the core philosophy.
