 I think my preference is to match the two styles here for now, after
 trying both versions. We have to keep the autofocusing on open/close in a
 lot of places here, so I'd rather have that style be familiar to
 primarily-mouse users before they see it "unintentionally".

 I definitely see your points about considering these interactions
 separately, and we should do that when we redesign this interface more
 broadly from the ground up (hopefully soonish, initial ideas encouraged).
