 As suggested, I've moved the new function to a more-appropriate place, and
 added an apply_filters call.

 @joemcgill , you were right in that I overlooked a preg_replace call;
 thanks for the catch.

 The question of whether we should remove leading 'www.' in names here is
 still open. It is a change, and while I'd argue it's a change for the
 better, it's a pretty weak argument.
