 I am very certain that these are two different issues, but have dealt with
 both of them on almost every single site that I've worked on.  I have
 found that saving the image in a different format enabled me to deal with
 issue 1.  Issue #2 is always caused by something different - in most
 cases, some plugin or another that is throwing an error that messes with
 ajax. It seems like ajax issues could be resolved by isolating
 functionality. I know that might be a big deal to refactor, but that's my
 take.
