 cmyk-image-in-php the code] from this Stackoverflow post (esp the
 imagemagick and GD versions to spot RGB vs CMYK) can be used to diagnose
 the image being uploaded and take appropriate measures depending on what
 we find to be the limits on Image Magick's processing capabilities. I know
 we're sort of down a rat hole here, but this problem really irks me for
 some reason :)

 One thing that I have seen is very wide images cause processing to fail,
 although I have seen other issues so there may be multiple root causes
 here.
