 Not true, as far as I have understood the mechanisms already baked into
 WordPress. No sites will break because PHP or MySQL minimum requirement is
 raised. From that time sites that don't meet this will just not be able to
 upgrade to the next major release using one-click updates. They may only
 receive minor updates. If they force manual update (FTP etc) they will be
 met by some sort of error or sorry message.

 The biggest concerns are then:
 1) How to guide users to contact their hosting provider to get a upgrade
 to their PHP version
 2) How to deal with the sad story of those who just doesn't understand
 what PHP is, how to contact their host and that there are a never major
 version WordPress that they aren't able to upgrade to

 I like the idea of a joint effort by he whole community to guide and help
 users. We are thousands of developers who want to participate, and follow
 some guidelines on how to meet users facing this situation.

 I also want to see just one figure: The number of users who will probably
 see this problem at release time after this change, taking to account that
 many users/site owners never update their WordPress anyway.

 As a start, how many who updated to 4.4 runs PHP 5.2?

 We demand a decision on future date or release that minimum PHP will be
 raised to at least 5.3 so we can start preparing, both ourselves, users
 and hosts to this day. That would be proper leadership.
