 Thanks for the feedback.

 A custom `search.php` in your theme shouldn't affect the admin area
 because this file doesn't get loaded in the admin area. Your theme's
 `functions.php` file does load in the admin area though, so I suspect this
 may be the cause of your problem if it's making unbounded changes to the
 search results query.
