 Seems like it's an issue with the theme. So you can close the ticket. Just
 so I understand. I have a custom search.php page in my theme. I didn't
 think that would effect admin search. But it appears to do so. Am i
 correct in this assumption.

 Then I would like to make this a feature question. Admin search should not
 be effected by your themes search. Admin search should do what it says
 it's going to do.
