 My humble opinion is you should adopt Simple Image Sizes plugin in the
 core. It should be easy for beginners, they cannot use filters and
 functions.php.

 Dont go Joomla way, continue on same path as Drupal. (fast not right
 comparation, Joomla doesnt have image sizes at all)
