 The biggest reason I don't see this as an issue is that the Customizer UI
 is designed to be one-column. And so while we could make that column
 wider, there are generally more issues with vertical space than with
 horizontal space (and #31336 will address vertical space issues). I would
 be strongly against doing something like this solely so that it's easier
 for developers to implement multi-column layouts in the Customizer
 controls that introduce unnecessary UI complexity. But if there are
 specific arguments for why a wider controls area (and the resulting
 narrower preview, which already causes issues with triggering responsive
 styles as it is) would improve usability for the one-column design
 framework that we have, I would be interested in hearing those.
