 We could try something with just a left border and maybe a
 background/color color change. Here's a super quick mockup:

 With a transition, it would add a little motion, a contrast from other
 hover/active states, and work pretty well throughout the side nav. For the
 top nav, I would go with a bottom border (via box-shadow to avoid repaint)
 instead.
