 In case this helps, I'd like to cross-post from #21811 in which (possibly
 mistakenly) I had posted some patches that address the same issue in a
 different way (though I really like the UI proposed by chriswallace).

 The solution was broken into 3 patches:

 arbitrary cropping of any intermediate sizes]

 If there's merit to this approach, I'll refresh the patches and upload
 them to this ticket. I'll keep my eye on this ticket to see if there's any
 traction.
