 Yes, I think that works just as well, if not better than my suggestion.  I
 have just had multiple clients in the last few weeks ask how to add to a
 gallery as they were confused.

 I think making the icons and box show up on hover helps a lot.  I would
 also suggest having the icons show up at the top left like they normally
 do but they should scroll as the gallery is scrolled.    Meaning if a
 gallery has 40 images in it or so no matter where they were in the editor
 if they hovered over the gallery part the two icons would show up, not
 require them to scroll to the beginning of the gallery to see the icons.
