See my earlier reply and work-around at reply:63 in this thread.
Newer WP versions do handle this a little better. Make sure you are on WP
3.8 or later.
Installing the two plugins mentioned ("CMS Tree Page View" and "Add
Descendants as Submenu Items") and using them should be all you need to
do, regardless of the server or hosting environment your site is on.
After installing them:
Use the new "CMS Tree Page View" in the Dashboard Pages menu to get your
parent/child page structures organized as they needs to be for your menu.
Edit your main menu and delete all manually added sub-menu items under the
top level entries, and instead, use the new check box in each top level
menu item to "Automatically add all descendants as submenu items". Save
the menu. Be sure to specify that menu as your theme's primary navigation
menu.
Then, in future, as long as you use the CMS Tree Page View to add all new
pages under existing top level menu items and in the desired order, and
you don't need to re-arrange or add to the top level pages, you should
never have to edit the top menu again.
Using these plugins and processes, my main menu is over 80 main and sub-
menu items, of which only 19 are defined in the WP custom menu, and that
is not a problem for WP 3.8. My site has over 700 WP pages. So I have to
go even further and use the other plugins and processes I describe in my
earlier reply to build and display additional sidebar menus on applicable
pages. But unless you have a huge and complex site like mine, the simplest
solution is to use the two plugins I describe here.
