 Hi @schlimpf, thanks for the ticket!

 I don't think that 'domain mapping' as provided by a plugin such as
 WordPress MU Domain Mapping is something that should be in core. However,
 the ability to use arbitrary domains/paths for sites—removing the need for
 domain mapping in most cases—seems more realistic. We've made some good
 progress in cleaning up the bootstrap process in this release (see #27003)
 to further improve support.

 As you mentioned, it is possible to do some of this already, especially
 with the use of a custom `sunrise.php` file. The bootstrap and database
 have support. The biggest problem is the lack of a UI for entering
 arbitrary domains/paths.

 It would be worth reading through

 material.
