 +1 on the remarks about it needing a means to be disabled.

 In particular, it should be disabled by default if WP detects a .git or
 .svn repo somewhere in the WP root folder.

 Auto-updates should only ever occur for sites setup without source
 control, and even then methinks WP should be ''very'' careful.
