 I think that seems overly complicated. My patch already supports
 controlling the number of outputted units and a theme/plugin is welcome to
 do it's own additional logic to decide it's own number of units value.

 The patch you reference was specifically written to be a simple
 improvement to the function as a short term fix. Larger fixes and
 improvements are contained within my patch. See the above comments for
 details.
