 rehabilitates some whitespace / removes unused code / etc. I didn't
 actually change much code, just made it work in the ways I described.

 Thank You! i knew i needed help, but had to start somewhere. i'll pull
 this diff and integrate; i've got several other changes from our Revisions
 meeting this morning.
