 Why were the return-by-references added back? I wonder if we still need
 them anymore.

 We might need to keep term_cache_group() as we'll need to keep the
 standard category, post_tag, and link_category buckets, but we should be
 able to get away with prefixing the buckets of any custom taxonomy.
