 This seems like the sort of thing you shouldn't have to think too much
 about. I don't know about the rest of you, but in my software development
 life outside of WP, my standard workflow goes something like this:

 * One or more people create a branch from trunk.
 * Once work on the branch is done, merge those changes back to trunk.
 * Once trunk is ready for release, create a tag.

 I think whatever needs to be done on the server side to make that pretty
 standard workflow function correctly should be addressed immediately.
