 After the incident reported with this bug
 http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/15108 I wanted to delete all the
 extra categories and have the posts be reassigned to the default category.

 Deleting the categories actually resulted in the posts becoming
 uncategorized, see screenshot:

 FWIW, wordpress edit posts screen does not allow selection of posts with
 "no category".
