-1 to reverting. I think most people here who are pushing to reverting
this is forgetting one thing; WordPress is a registered trademark. It
happens to be registered by Automattic Inc. As such that company has the
legal right to enforce proper usage of their trademark, which includes the
capital 'P'. Failure to do so, results in the watering down of the
trademark. Look at Kleenex for example, Kleenex is officially a
registered trademark, but common usage of that word, has watered that
trademark down because everyone uses the work Kleenex to refer to any
tissue paper, not just Kleenex tissue paper.
Automattic, desiring to protect their trademark, which they have the right
to do, has chosen to add a filter to the WordPress software that enforces
correct capitalization. I agree that to help prevent most of the false
positives, that Mark's proposed fix above should be implemented, but I
disagree with the reverting of this. What I personally disagree with is
those that are going to remove the filter to prevent proper capitalization
of WordPress. That just perpetuates the incorrect capitalization, which
only serves to waterdown the trademark.
I'm curious to know why the stark opposition to the enforcement of a
trademark. Personally, I think this is the right step, because it helps
enforce the trademark, and hopefully through this, other journalists and
other non-WordPress users will use the correct capitalization as well.
