 To future proof this can we stick with a png logo, with transparency,
 rendering any future changes to background colour irrelevant. I replace
 the header image with a custom logo on many of my Wordpress sites. It
 helps distinguish between many admin areas in many tabs!

 If IE6 needs to be supported I can recommend the following script, which
 works well, and
 isn't a CSS hack:
