saving two copies of the post is the best solution - rather, I would
suggest adding an option to disable the generation of the shortcode and
make WP use HTML tags instead.[[BR]]

inserting an image would put HTML tags into the post instead of a
shortcode.
I'm actually not sure that saving two copies is a good idea either, there
are pros & cons to any solution. Saving two copies solves the display
performance problem and Otto's "I want everything to stay as HTML" desire
but does cause other issues.
As for an option to disable shortcodes, I don't think that is really a
viable option considering how many things can be done with shortcodes from
plugins. Disabling them stunts far too much available functionality.
