 The "Key 'comment_date_gmt' doesn't exist in table" error mentioned in
 that thread would explain why comments wouldn't show in the admin.  That
 key is supposed to be added during upgrade, but evidently it doesn't get
 added  for some.  That error doesn't explain the other symptoms, however.
 Do you see any errors in the error log?
