 Upon further inspection, the issue was not caused by a CMYK jpeg or 8bpp.

 It was caused by a local installation of WordPress on OS X Leopard
 computer with aparently does not come with the GD library installed by
 default. After installing GD, image uploading works properly.

 As a side note: all of this failed silently. Shouldn't there be some sort
 of notificication that this won't work without the GD library? I feel like
 most people would have absolutely no idea this was the problem (or what to
 do about that).
